In practice, many big-driver IEMs are tuned to lean into low-end presence, so people associate 13.8mm with “deep bass.” When the design is done well, the payoff is a weighty low end that still stays controlled—more rumble in electronic tracks, more body on kick drums, and a thicker foundation for hip-hop and pop.
Smaller dynamic drivers (or hybrids with a dynamic woofer) can deliver excellent bass if the driver is fast and well-damped and the shell/venting is engineered correctly. A tighter mid-bass punch and cleaner transitions into the mids can sometimes be easier to achieve with a smaller diaphragm, especially if the larger driver is tuned too hot or loses control in the upper-bass region.
If bass is the priority, pay attention to sub-bass extension, bass texture (can you hear bass notes clearly, not just feel them?), and how the lows interact with vocals. Fit and seal matter, too: even the biggest driver won’t hit hard if the eartips don’t seal properly.
